Ministry conversations

I was down at SAGU yesterday visiting Matt Rules, a ministry friend of mine. Matt is the youth pastor at Spring First in Spring, Texas. He’s been there almost a year and he’s doing a great job there.

But it was great to be able to get together and share about the ministries we are both involved in. I love finding out what’s working in other churches and other ministries. It encourages me to hear what God is doing across the country.

I think Ministry Conversations are vital to a healthy minister. I’m also a part of the Frisco FLOCK, which is a networking group of Youth Pastors here in Frisco. We meet about once a month and just share about what we’re seeing in students in Frisco, what’s working for us, what’s NOT working for us, and we just encourage each other. Randy Creech from Student Venture organizes this, and I’m very grateful for him. It’s great to get together with youth pastors from different denominations, many within walking distance from my own church.

We don’t need to be so defensive, closed off, and narrow minded when it comes to the other churches around us. We tend to get very territorial and protective – nervous that we’re not good enough and our students will leave us to go to another church. I HATE that! I’ve been in churches where that was the case and it’s toxic.

Sharing what’s going on within ourselves and the ministries we work with makes us stronger.

We need each other.

Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend.”
