Wedding Dress

There is a song that has really been speaking (or singing) to me lately that I think is incredibly deep and meaningful. It’s a song called “Wedding Dress” by Derek Webb. Derek was once part of the group Caedmon’s Call, but he has since left to do some solo work.

But this song of his is quite interesting. It talks about how easy it is for us as followers of Christ to totally stiff God with our lives, as if we are cheating in a marriage. Here, I’ll let you read for yourself:

If you could love me as a wife
and for my wedding gift, your life
should that be all i’ll ever need
or is there more i’m looking for

and should i read between the lines
and look for blessings in disguise
to make me handsome, rich, and wise
is that really what you want

(chorus)
i am a whore i do confess
but i put you on just like a wedding dress
and i run down the aisle
i’m a prodigal with no way home
but i put you on just like a ring of gold
and i run down the aisle to you

so could you love this bastard child
though i don’t trust you to provide
with one hand in a pot of gold
and with the other in your side
i am so easily satisfied
by the call of lovers less wild
that i would take a little cash
over your very flesh and blood

because money cannot buy
a husband’s jealous eye
when you have knowingly deceived his wife

In an interview with Derek about this song, he mentions how he struggles to truly believe that God will take care of all of his needs. So, in an effort to try and DO something to fulfill, sustain, or meet something in his life, he falls for “lovers less wild.”

I believe this is a song that speaks not only TO all of us, but FROM all of us. How easy is it for us to forget God’s mercy and blessings on our lives to only fall into the same way of living, in order to fill some sort of need that we have that we think we must fill ourselves.

Tender mercies that are given freely. He supplies all of our needs…every single one.

God, help me to always remember that.
